Choking
Choking is a serious medical emergency that can quickly become life-threatening. Choking occurs when the airway is partially or completely blocked, restricting the flow of air to the lungs. In this first aid guide, we will equip you with the knowledge and techniques needed to respond effectively and confidently when faced with choking incidents.
a) Assess the situation.
The first step in helping someone who is choking is to assess the situation.
Determine if the person is conscious and able to speak. If the person is
unconscious, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
b) Perform the Heimlich maneuver.
If the person is conscious and able to speak, you can try to help them clear the
obstruction by performing the Heimlich maneuver. Stand behind the person and
put your arms around their waist to do this. Make a fist with one hand and
position it right above the person’s navel. Take hold of the person’s abdomen
with your other hand, then quickly and upwardly shove your fist into it. Repeat
the Heimlich maneuver until the object is dislodged or the person loses
consciousness.
c) If the person loses consciousness, perform CPR.
If the person loses consciousness, you will need to perform CPR. To do this, place
the person on their back and tilt their head back. Pinch their nose tight and
put your mouth over theirs. Blow into their mouth until their chest starts to
rise. Then, give them 30 chest compressions. Continue CPR until the object is
dislodged or help arrives.Remember, acting quickly and appropriately can save lives. By familiarizing yourself with the techniques and information provided in this first aid guide, you are equipped to respond confidently in choking emergencies.
